When love was new

 When love was new

When love was new

We looked above their sins

So excited all we saw was

What our passions let us

Puppy love excused it all

We embraced the future

Not knowing of the turns

That lay in front in years ahead.

Middle age arrived and so

The faults appeared so clear

But were always there, shielded

By the curtain of infatuation.

But we learned to love

Despite the failings and the fall

The same person hadn’t changed

Just more lines and grey.

Old age approaches

And the fondness grows

Not despite but because

We have come to love those flaws.

Happy to accept

Willing to embrace

The early lover

In their full humanity.
