Unworthy

 We are not worthy

We are not worthy of the miracle

That daily lines our lives and spirits

The grace that gives and fills with light

That raises up and makes all bright.

Freely given and never earned

Just like our birth against the odds

That we should even be at all

The chances are so very small

Thank you, thank you for this day

Whom I’m thanking I cannot say

Life, God or nature, take your pick

Is all existence but a trick?

I must believe there’s something there

But I’m reluctant to boldly swear

It’s Christ or Buddha or even God

Explained by music and by love.

It’s when words fail and even verse

And as for sermons, nothing’s worse

Turn down the preacher and up the sound

Let’s dance and sing and laugh out loud.

Let be our temples concert halls

Where concert goers know the calls

When self is lost amidst the crowd

When nothing’s timed ‘cos time stands still.

A choir of angels where some can sing

And others cannot hold a note

It doesn’t matter, it’s all the same

Where all are welcome without a vote.

When we die our cosmic dust

Blows where it will, as it must

Beyond the planets and some day

Will go beyond our Milky Way.
