I walked

 I walked

I walked among the trees to breathe again

Their branches bending down embracing me

Leaning down to give some comfort

In the sultry September evening.

Records of all sorts are broken

Awaiting evening news to understand

If indeed it’s is the hottest day in history

While Grecian rivers run down roads.

Trees our past and now our future

If younger generations are to survive

We never can have too many

The question is - have we planted any?

I pass the fallen trees - our erstwhile heroes

Felled by summer storms sans precedent

Roots in the air, victims of the gale

That robbed them of a hundred years of growth.

Breathe in, breath out beneath the boughs

That hear our prayers and our sighs

The canopy that grants us mercy

From sun and rain in lows and highs.
